Why I practice
this way
Thirty-five years of practice have produced a clear conviction: most of what makes people feel unwell is connected. No single system explains it. No single specialty can fix it.
Whole-person care
Sleep, mood, metabolism, and cognition interact. Treating one without the others produces temporary results.
Time to understand
Fifteen minutes is enough to adjust a medication. It is not enough to find out why someone feels the way they do.
Community roots
I know Dearborn families across three generations. That shapes how I practice more than anything hanging on my wall.
I trained in psychiatry, and for a long time I practiced the way most psychiatrists do — a diagnosis, a medication, a follow-up in six weeks. It worked often enough. But I kept meeting people it did not work for, and when I looked closer the reason usually was not psychiatric. They were not sleeping. Their blood sugar or their thyroid had drifted. They were taking three medications that worked against each other. So I went back and trained in sleep medicine, then brain injury medicine, then integrative and lifestyle medicine. Those were the answers I needed.
There is a conversation that repeats itself in my office. Someone has seen four or five doctors. Each one examined a piece and found nothing clearly wrong with that piece. The bloodwork is normal. The scan is clean. The person is told, kindly, that they are fine — and they go home knowing they are not. What nobody has done is set the pieces beside each other and ask whether they are related. Often they are. Poor sleep raises blood pressure and flattens mood. A medication for one problem worsens another. None of that shows up when you look at one system at a time.
The tests were normal.
The person was not.
What gets missed most often is sleep — not as a complaint, but as a cause. Low mood, poor concentration, weight that will not move, blood pressure that will not settle: sleep sits underneath more of it than most people expect. The second thing missed is time. Fifteen minutes is enough to adjust a medication. It is not enough to find out why someone feels the way they do.
I have practiced in Dearborn for thirty-five years. I know these families, in many cases across three generations. That has shaped how I practice more than anything hanging on my wall.
Board-certified across the areas that shape how you feel.
Dr. Ashar Khan’s training extends across mental health, sleep, brain health, integrative medicine, and lifestyle medicine. This breadth allows him to consider symptoms in context — especially when concerns such as poor sleep, fatigue, mood changes, brain fog, and metabolic health overlap.
Five areas of certification. One coordinated view of the patient.
What an appointment with me looks like
The first appointment is an hour. I ask about your sleep — when you go to bed, when you actually fall asleep, whether you snore, how you feel at four in the afternoon. I ask what you eat and when you eat it. I go through every medication and supplement you take, including the ones someone told you to stop. I read your labs going back as many years as you can bring me, because a value that has stayed inside the normal range while moving steadily in one direction for five years tells me more than any single result. And I ask what your days actually look like, because that is usually where the answer is.
You leave with a written plan, in order, with the first thing to start this week. Some of it is a prescription. A good deal of it is not.
I am not the right doctor for everyone. If you need a quick medication adjustment, your current psychiatrist can do that faster than I can. If you want a treatment I cannot support with evidence, I will tell you so directly. And if you are in crisis, you need help sooner than an office appointment — call or text 988, or call 911, and come and see me afterwards.
